William Charles "Chief" Price was born July 28, 1914 in North Vernon, Indiana to Charles Richard Augustus and Goldie I. (Barton) Price. The family moved to Wichita, Kansas, where Price graduated from Wichita High School East in 1933. He continued on to Wichita State University, where he played football and belonged to Kappa Alpha Psi; he graduated in 1939. In 1881 an organization of Topeka, Kansas residents, who had met for prayer meetings since 1879, was granted a charter to conduct public worship. That same year, the group bought land and began building on the Church's present site at 1201 Buchanan in the heart of what originally was known as Tennessee Town.
